Is Now the Right Time for Full Time Hires?

Over the last weeks and months, COVID-19 has created a wave of economic uncertainty for businesses all across America. The fallout has been huge: increasing amount of unemployment benefits; forced closing of hospitality, retail and other businesses deemed “non-essential”; schools closed and replaced with online learning; and shifting business models (to name a few).

At GigWorx, we’ve used this time to reflect on how to best help our clients and customers weather the storm, called COVID-19. Many restaurant owners already know that gig workers make great restaurant staff, but a contingent workforce might be the right solution for all areas within the hospitality industry, as well other industries including construction, retail, warehousing, and more.

Employees with personal health issues or employees with family members with compromised immune systems (including older adults or family members with heart, lung disease or diabetes) are encouraged to reduce or eliminate occupational exposure to the coronavirus. When you add the number of employees who can no longer work because they have young children at home due to schools closing, many business owners and managers are finding themselves working with a skeleton crew. But is now the best time to hire full hire replacements?

We’ve taken measurable steps to train gig workers in OSHA’s (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) best practices in regards to the prevention and spread of COVID-19, including:

  • Keep hands clean by frequently washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and running water aren’t available, an alcohol-based hand rub (at least 60% alcohol) can be substituted.
  • No touching of the eyes, nose, or mouth, especially with unwashed hands.
  • Use good respiratory etiquette by covering coughs and sneezes using the crook of the elbow.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Call in sick and stay home if experiencing any of the 10 COVID-19 symptoms outlined by CNN, including: shortness of breath; fever; dry cough; chills and body aches; sudden confusion; digestive issues; pink eye; loss of smell or taste; fatigue; and headache, sore throat and congestion.
